West Coast Metis Jiggers

West Coast Metis Jiggers

World Famous Métis Jiggers
Métis Family Services has created this up and coming new dance group called The West Coast Métis Jiggers. Yvonne Chartrand, who took Women’s First Place, at The Canadian Red River Jigging Championship at John Arcand’s Fiddle Fest 2005, has been their teacher since January 2004. The group started out as collaboration between Métis family Services, Mooshum Bob Kelly and Yvonne Chartrand. Madeline McCallum a former student of Yvonne’s has enthusiastically provided new energy in carrying on the teachings of Métis Jigging.

There are approximately thirty children in the group ranging from ages three to fifteen. The children love their dance classes as much as performing and the dance is a strong thread in the community to bring people together, to promote pride, build self-esteem and to celebrate our Métis culture. The youth are very proud to share what they know as Métis people. They have practiced very hard to develop their skills and knowledge of Métis Culture.

The children have performed for many festivals and events including, Margo Kane’s Talking Stick Festival, The Vancouver International Children’s Festival, Aboriginal Child and Welfare Conference, Aboriginal Day and numerous other cultural and community events.
